Key Industry Partnerships
Zespri
International
The New Zealand kiwifruit sector is a world leader in the supply and
marketing of an iconic fresh fruit, but does not have sufficient capacity
to control the market returns long term. Continued success can be
ensured by the development of new fruit varieties, intermediate ingredients
and consumer products that have been protected by plant variety rights
(PVR), trade secrets or patents.
ZESPRI is recognised as an innovative fresh fruit supplier. It has
a history of funding Research and Development in areas critical to
the kiwifruit industry. Zespri International has taken the initiative
in funding health-oriented ingredients research since 2000. This research
programme has been focusing on creating high value intermediate ingredients,
using the current non-premium kiwifruit (approximate 5~7% of total
New Zealand kiwifruit, which can not be sold as fresh fruit in international
market due to their size and appearance not meeting the market standard),
suitable for use in health-oriented dietary supplements, beverages,
foods, and other bioactive products.
Bioactives Research New Zealand has been developing a platform of
new knowledge and novel techniques for extracting, stabilising and
re-combining the health-promoting components from kiwifruit as well
as establishing data to illustrate health benefits. Identified health
benefits include improving gut health, immunomodulation, reducing
aging, lowering blood lipids, improving heart health, or anti-cancer
properties. A kiwifruit extract capsule product has been successfully
developed by Bioactives Research New Zealand in collaboration with
the New Zealand Institute for Crop and Food Research, Massey University,
Landcare Research, and Bioactives Research New Zealand¡¯s overseas
partners which include; Qin Dao University, China Pharmaceutical University,
Xinjiang University, Xinjiang Medical University, and Xinjiang People¡¯s
Hospital.
